Jamestown will host its second annual Juneteenth celebration Thursday, June 12th from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Hansen Arts Park. Organized by the Stutsman County Human Rights Coalition and curated by Heather McDougall, the free community event features a family reunion theme celebrating African American history and culture. Other partners involved are: WEAREONE, a nationwide DJ collective and social agency, and Fred’s Dissonance, a group from the F-M area that puts on events that foster “unity, art, and creativity.” Activities include free food, kids’ handprint tree mural, Juneteenth t-shirt making, musical instrument creation, and local performances with youth-led presentations. The indoor and outdoor celebration aims to bring the community together to “break bread, share stories” and honor the journey toward freedom. There is a slight chance of rain, but the celebration will proceed regardless! Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, marking June 19, 1865.
