Complex, and Time Sensitive; Details in Hiring H-2A Guest Workers

By Ryan King Jun 13, 2025 | 7:54 AM

Hiring H-2A guest workers is a complex, time-sensitive process that requires extensive planning and preparation.

Farmers are required to start at least four to six months in advance to navigate federal and state requirements, including documenting attempts to hire domestic workers and filing paperwork with multiple government agencies. Many farmers mistakenly have believed the process is as simple as hiring a local service provider.

Labor needs, housing, and legal compliance also play major roles in determining how feasible the H-2A program is for a farm. Smaller farms might benefit from using farm labor contractors who handle housing and payroll, while larger farms might find that those costs add up over time. Additionally, any benefits or wages given to H-2A workers must also be extended to domestic workers, impacting broader labor management and farm budgets.
