A St. Thomas, North Dakota man was arrested Monday on federal charges for allegedly threatening a U.S. official in emails referencing the recent Minnesota legislator shootings.

Charles Dalzell, 46, sent threatening emails Sunday night to someone identified as “J.P.” at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for North Dakota, believed to be Acting U.S. Attorney Jennifer Puhl. In the emails, Dalzell referenced the assassination of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman, saying he didn’t want the situation “to end up like Minnesota over the weekend.”

Dalzell allegedly claimed he was owed money from a court victory and threatened that “North Dakota better not end up like Minnesota,” adding he was “extremely pissed off” and warning of consequences if officials didn’t follow “the law and the rules and the constitution.”

The FBI also cited a February 2024 email where Dalzell said he was “on the very edge of flipping out” and referenced a word “that starts with a V and ends with a T.”

Dalzell faces federal charges for transmitting interstate threats and threatening to assault or murder a U.S. official. He’s scheduled for his first court appearance Wednesday.
