As first reported by KX News, motorcycle crashes are increasing across North Dakota as warmer weather brings more riders to the roads, prompting safety warnings from the Highway Patrol.
According to 2023 North Dakota Department of Transportation data, one motorcyclist is involved in a crash about every two days during spring and summer. Motorcycle registrations have increased nearly 8% over the past five years, meaning more bikes on the road.
Lieutenant Jenna Clawson Huibregtse says many riders still avoid helmets for “the cool factor” or claiming visibility restrictions, despite improved helmet technology. North Dakota requires helmets only for riders under 18, though the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says helmets reduce crash death risk by 37%.
Officials urge car drivers to help prevent crashes by slowing down, checking mirrors and blind spots, and watching for motorcycles, especially at intersections where many crashes occur.
