Thursday, June 19 is Juneteenth, a federally recognized holiday celebrating the ending of slavery in the United States.
It was on June 19, 1865 when the final enslaved people in Texas were emancipated, over two months after the Civil War had ended.
The holiday was first celebrated in 1866 in Texas, and spread to communities across the country. The holiday was federally recognized in 2021.
Federal services and many business are closed in observance of the holiday.
