Another storm-related death has been discovered in the area. Stutsman County commissioners unanimously declared an emergency Monday following the deadly June 20-21 storms that claimed another life in the region. A 76-year-old man in rural Courtenay died when severe weather knocked out power to his home, causing his breathing machine to fail while he slept.

The storms brought tornadoes, including an EF1 near Medina with 100 mph winds, along with destructive hail and flooding that damaged roads, buildings, and infrastructure throughout the county. The county’s emergency communications center fielded over 300 calls during the two-day event, while the Sheriff’s office meeting rooms sheltered about 20 stranded travelers.

Extensive damage was reported to county road department equipment and vehicles, while Lakeside Campground will remain closed through July due to widespread tree damage and broken water lines. The storm had a critical impact on infrastructure, with yet another tragic death of an elderly resident whose vital medical equipment failed as a result. The severe nature of this event continues to affect communities in the area.
