U.S. Facing Possible Largest Trade Deficit in History

By Ryan King Jun 24, 2025 | 7:53 AM

According to the American Farm Bureau Federation’s Market Intel, the U.S. is on track to reach its largest agricultural trade deficit in history.

From January through April 2025, the U.S. imported $78.2 billion in agricultural goods while exporting only $58.5 billion—a $19.7 billion gap. This marks the biggest deficit ever recorded during the first four months of a year.

Despite the negative trend, there are signs of potential improvement. A new U.S.–U.K. trade agreement has eliminated key tariffs on beef and ethanol, offering hope for future export growth. However, Farm Bureau analysts emphasize that closing the trade gap will require more than isolated deals.
