A new class of NBA rookies will be selected tonight in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft.
The Dallas Mavericks hold the number 1 pick, and are assumed to take Duke Forward Cooper Flagg, after trading away their former superstar Luka Doncic during the season.
The Minnesota Timberwolves currently hold the 17th pick in the draft, that they acquired from the New York Knicks during the Karl Anthony-Towns trade, and will look to add another piece to the team after appearing in the Western Conference Finals two years in a row.
Minnesota would be best to search for a point guard who can score, compliment, and set up plays for their own superstar Anthony Edwards. During a pivotal Game 5 of the Conference Finals where the T-Wolves season was on the line, starting point guard Mike Conley finished the game with 0 points. Minnesota could use a guard who can produce some points without looking to Anthony Edwards to score them every time.
Another position Minnesota could be looking into is the center position, Rudy Gobert was basically invisible against the Thunder in the Western Conference Finals with just a few points here and there. The team is also unsure about the future of Naz Reid who comes off the bench for Gobert who is due for a new contract. Minnesota could benefit by getting a big-man down below the basket who can score and play defense as well, if both Reid and Gobert’s future on the team remains unclear.
The Timberwolves will also have an early pick in the second round at number 31, so two picks of the best player available are certainly in the cards for the Timberwolves.
Minnesota will face an interesting offseason, trying to figure out the pieces to the puzzle to finally get over the Conference Finals hump and into the NBA Finals for the first time in team history with new owners taking over.
