Jamestown Ditches Mosquito-Spraying, Cass County Beings Campaign

By Seth Dunlap Jul 1, 2025 | 6:40 AM

Cass County officials announced their summer mosquito spraying will begin this week, but Jamestown residents shouldn’t expect the same.

Late-spring and summer spraying for mosquitos and other dangerous insects had been common in Jamestown, but Mayor Dwaine Heinrich and the City Council said earlier this year that they believed spraying was not cost-effective.  The city said each mosquito spraying cost $36,000.

Every Jamestown property pays a $1.50 per month premium on their bills for vector control, which typically included spraying.   The City Council and Mayor Heinrich now say that money will be distributed elsewhere, but did not provide specific details.

Jamestown’s Vector Control Fund had a nearly $350,000 balance on hand in April, according to a report that month by the Jamestown Sun.

Pest control experts believe without spraying, mosquitos can rapidly breed and infest saturated areas.
