A Grand Forks man received an eight-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to attempted murder. Alexander Antonio Thompson, 28, changed his plea Monday and was sentenced to 20 years with 12 suspended, meaning he’ll serve eight years behind bars.
Thompson attacked a coworker on April 22, 2024, first choking him with his hands during a physical altercation, then grabbing an electrical extension cord and wrapping it around the man’s neck as he tried to walk away. Witnesses reported the victim’s eyes rolled back and he lost consciousness while Thompson said “I’m going to kill you.” Several people had to intervene to stop the attack.
Thompson pleaded guilty to Class A felony attempted murder and Class C felony aggravated assault, with an additional aggravated assault charge dismissed under his plea agreement. He received credit for 435 days already served and must complete anger management while incarcerated, followed by two years of supervised probation upon release.
