Arizona farmers are sounding the alarm over a worsening labor shortage that threatens the viability of farms across the country.
Officials say the industry lacks enough workers, causing operations to shut down and forcing the U.S. to rely more on food imports. Farm leaders emphasize that the current H-2A guest worker visa program is outdated, overly complex, and inadequate for the scale of labor needed.
In response to mounting pressure, President Donald Trump floated a new proposal allowing undocumented immigrants already in the U.S. to work legally under a special permit, with farmers taking responsibility for them. While it wouldn’t offer citizenship, the plan would allow workers to contribute to the tax base and help fill the critical workforce gap.
