Trump Administration to Shut Down USDA Regional Food Business Centers

By Ryan King Jul 17, 2025 | 8:02 AM

The Trump administration has announced it will shut down the USDA’s 12 Regional Food Business Centers, a program launched in 2023 to support small and mid-sized farmers and strengthen local food systems.

Funded through the American Rescue Plan, the centers were designed to provide grants and technical assistance to help producers access markets and improve food supply chain resilience. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins called the initiative a temporary, COVID-era program and said existing commitments—over 450 “Business Builder” grants—will be honored, but no new funding will be issued.

Critics argue the decision contradicts the administration’s “Farmers First” agenda, which emphasizes support for small farms. The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition and others warn the move will harm rural communities and stall momentum in local food development.
