Farmers and Farm Credit Institutions Urging for Updates to FSA Loan Programs

By Ryan King Jul 18, 2025 | 7:49 AM

Farmers, rural bankers, and Farm Credit institutions heavily rely on the USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) loan programs, but they’re calling for key improvements—including higher loan limits, faster approval times, and more flexibility with guarantees.

During a House Agriculture Subcommittee hearing, farmers and banking representatives stressed that outdated loan limits and slow application processes don’t reflect modern agriculture’s scale or urgency. The National Farmers Union, highlighted how crucial FSA loans have been in supporting operations, and emphasized the need for quicker approvals and greater accessibility for new and socially disadvantaged farmers.

The House farm bill includes proposed updates to FSA loan caps, such as increasing ownership and operating loan limits and expanding microloan amounts, aiming to modernize federal credit support to meet the demands of today’s agricultural landscape.
