As first reported by the Grand Forks Herald, North Dakota is set to launch digital driver’s licenses this fall, making it the first among neighboring states to offer the technology. The mobile licenses, approved by lawmakers in 2021, will allow users to share only necessary information and block details like addresses or exact birthdates for added privacy.
The Department of Transportation is working with the TSA for acceptance at airports, and liquor establishments will use a special verifier app to confirm the digital IDs are legitimate. Twenty states now offer mobile licenses or are developing them.
Users will pay a five-dollar fee when they get their digital license and again at renewal. Officials say it’s part of the growing trend toward digital identification, similar to mobile banking.
