Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller has announced the reintroduction of an advanced pest control method—Swormlure Bait—to combat the threat of the New World Screwworm (NWS), a parasite that poses a major risk to U.S. agriculture, livestock, wildlife, and public health.
Swormlure-5, the latest version of this synthetic attractant, mimics the scent of open wounds to lure and kill adult screwworm and blow flies, without harming beneficial pollinators like bees and butterflies.
The Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) will lead the development and deployment of Swormlure-5 in partnership with the USDA, the Mexican government, and other agencies. This initiative follows a renewed NWS threat near the U.S.-Mexico border, which prompted the closure of cattle and livestock imports from Mexico.
