North Dakota’s interstate speed limit increases to 80 mph Friday, while urban areas slow down to 70 mph near Dickinson, Grand Forks, Jamestown, Valley City and Medora.
Existing slower zones in Bismarck and Fargo are also expanding. New 80 mph signs won’t be installed until Monday, but drivers can legally travel the higher speed starting Friday.
The Highway Patrol reports the average speed on North Dakota interstates is already 81 mph. The legislation also increased speeding fines, especially in construction zones where penalties jump from 80 to 150 dollars when workers are present.
In other changes, darker window tints are allowed, and blackout plates have been introduced.
