As first reported by the North Dakota Monitor, North Dakota will use drones and artificial intelligence to identify noxious weeds in southeastern counties during 2025 and 2026.

The Department of Agriculture awarded a $300,000 grant for the project, which aims to help officials respond faster to new infestations. Grand Farm near Casselton is leading the effort with partners including Thales, iSight Drone Services and North Dakota State University.

The technology will focus on soybean and sugar beet fields in Barnes, Cass, Richland, Steele, and Traill counties. The project will build a weed image library to improve detection of invasive species beyond Palmer amaranth.
