A 41-year-old Grafton, North Dakota man drowned Saturday evening in Cass Lake after entering the water to work on a boat motor problem. Cass County Sheriff Bryan Welk says the incident was reported at 5:50 PM when the man didn’t resurface.
Juveniles on the pontoon tried throwing him a life jacket, but high winds caused the boat to drift away. Other boaters on the lake intercepted the pontoon and called 911. The victim was recovered from the water around 7:51 PM but was not wearing a life vest.
Multiple agencies responded including fire departments, ambulance services, tribal police, conservation officers, and dive teams. An autopsy is scheduled and the investigation continues. The victim’s identity is being withheld pending family notification.
