Moorhead Police Chief Chris Helmick held a press conference on Tuesday afternoon and gave more information on the fatal shooting that happened in the city on Monday.

Chief Helmick said officers responded to disturbance calls at an apartment building on the 2400 block of 3rd Avenue North just before 9:00 p.m.  When officers arrived, they entered the building and were fired upon, according to Helmick.

Multiple agencies were called in to assist, including the Red River Valley SWAT team.

Officers reportedly exchanged gunfire again with the suspects upon re-entering the building, with two people being killed by the breaching officers.   Chief Helmick said officers also evacuated the building, taking some residents, including children, to safety.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the shooting, and SWAT officers involved in the shooting have reportedly been placed on leave.
