State Attorney Generals Joining Together to Fight Improper Beef Labeling

By Ryan King Aug 13, 2025 | 7:49 AM

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley is leading a bipartisan alliance of 11 attorneys general to support U.S. cattle ranchers in a legal fight over misleading beef labeling.

The alliance has filed an amicus brief, backing South Dakota ranchers who sued manufacturers for selling foreign-sourced beef under a “Product of USA” label. The South Dakota Federal District Court ruled in favor of the ranchers, agreeing that falsely labeling lower-quality foreign beef as American misleads consumers and damages both the reputation and financial well-being of U.S. ranchers.

Joining South Dakota in the coalition are the attorneys general from Colorado, Kansas, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wyoming.
