EPA Issues New Restrictions on Diesel Powered Farm Equipment

By Ryan King Aug 15, 2025 | 8:05 AM

The EPA has issued new guidance easing restrictions on diesel-powered farm equipment and other non-road heavy-duty vehicles by modifying rules around Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) system malfunctions.

Effective immediately for all model year 2027 diesel engines—and voluntary for other non-road equipment—manufacturers can now choose to delay severe engine power reductions when a DEF issue occurs. Under the new standard, farm machinery will maintain full power for 36 hours after a DEF malfunction, followed by a gradual torque reduction: 25% after 36 hours and 50% after 100 hours if repairs are not made.

Supporters say the change will provide substantial financial relief and operational flexibility for farmers. The Small Business Administration estimates the adjustment will save 1.8 million family farms $727 million annually, while USDA officials note it comes at a time of rising costs and trade deficits.
