North Dakota has confirmed its first case of anthrax in 2025, found in a beef cattle herd in Stark County, according to the North Dakota State University Veterinary Diagnostic Lab.
State officials stress that this case is a reminder for livestock producers—particularly in counties with a history of anthrax—to review their herds’ vaccination status and consult with veterinarians about risks. State Veterinarian Dr. Ethan Andress advised that unusual pasture losses should be reported quickly, as veterinarians are trained to respond and diagnostic testing gives the most reliable confirmation.
