The governor of Illinois has announced that Cronus Chemicals will begin construction on a $2 billion ammonia fertilizer plant near Tuscola, Illinois, after more than a decade of planning and permitting.
The facility, set to open in about 3 ½ years, will cover 230 acres and is expected to produce nearly 1 million short tons of ammonia annually. Officials highlighted the project as a major boost for Illinois agriculture, providing farmers with more reliable and affordable access to fertilizer at a time when high tariffs and rising input costs are straining farm income.
Company leaders and state officials emphasized that the plant will reduce U.S. dependence on imported nitrogen fertilizer, with CEO Erzin Atac noted the nation imports more than 2 million tons annually.
