Private Pesticide Applicators in South Dakota Facing Changes to Requirements/Endorsements

By Ryan King Sep 2, 2025 | 7:56 AM

Starting January 1, 2026, South Dakota private pesticide applicators will face new rules from the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) to align with updated EPA requirements.

Activities such as applying fumigants, using M-44 predator-control devices, and aerial applications are now considered high-risk and will require special endorsements. These endorsements are designed to reduce serious accidents and improve safety in agricultural pesticide use.

To earn an endorsement, applicators must pass a written exam specific to each activity, with exams offered in person at SDSU Extension Regional Centers and select county offices. Endorsements will expire alongside the applicator’s license and require topic-specific training for renewal.
