The North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality responded to a chemical spill in the Cannonball River near New England September 3rd following an agricultural implement accident. An undetermined amount of diesel fuel and approximately 200 gallons of chemicals were released into the waterway. The driver was uninjured. Hettinger County Emergency Management swiftly deployed containment booms while NDDEQ collected water samples for analysis. People are asked to avoid recreational activities within one mile upstream and downstream of the site of the incident, and fish consumption from the affected area is discouraged until further notice. Officials are working with the responsible party on cleanup and will provide updates once water tests confirm the area is safe.
NDDEQ: “Federal and state laws require operators to report the spillage of any materials that may pollute water, air or soil. Visit spill.nd.gov for more information about North Dakota’s Unified Spill Reporting System notifications and the public access tool.”
