Pasture Conditions Falling in U.S.

The USDA Crop Progress reports show that dry weather is taking a toll on pastures across much of the Midwest and eastern states, with notable declines in good-to-excellent ratings. Iowa and Missouri dropped to 72% and 65% in this category, while eastern states saw sharper decreases — Ohio fell 24 points to 36%, Kentucky dropped 16 points to 31%, and Tennessee slipped 10 points to 38%.

These declines also translated into more pastures ranked very poor to poor, with Ohio climbing to 27%, Kentucky to 35%, and Tennessee to 31%. Meanwhile, in the West, Nevada continues to struggle with 90% of pastures rated very poor to poor. Texas and Oklahoma, two key beef states, also saw small gains, moving up to 39% and 63% good-to-excellent, respectively.

Experts note that fall seeding can help producers renovate pastures and prepare for stronger yields in spring. Proper timing, grass selection, and seeding depth are critical for success, and in cases of dry soil conditions, waiting for better moisture may improve establishment.
