California Passes E15 Fuel Sales Bill

By Ryan King Sep 5, 2025 | 7:59 AM

The California Senate has unanimously approved a bill to allow E15 fuel sales in the state for the first time. Because the measure is considered an urgency statute, it will take effect immediately, opening a potential 600- to 800-million-gallon ethanol market.

California had been the only state in the nation that prohibited E15 sales, despite studies showing potential cost savings of up to $2.7 billion annually and environmental benefits such as reduced emissions of harmful pollutants.

Supporters argue that E15 will help ease gasoline supply concerns as refineries close, lower prices at the pump, and provide cleaner air for California residents.

The move comes after years of regulatory delays, with industry groups like the Renewable Fuels Association and Growth Energy pushing for approval since 2018.
