Tar spot has now been confirmed in 28 Wisconsin counties, raising concerns for corn growers as harvest approaches in the state. While the most recent USDA Crop Progress Report rated 83% of Wisconsin’s corn crop as good to excellent, disease pressure remains a major challenge. Alongside tar spot, southern rust and northern corn leaf blight are appearing across fields as well. Experts warn that while cooler weather may slow southern rust, it could also fuel the spread of tar spot.
Agronomists say late-season diseases are a key concern as growers work to protect yields. Since early July, tar spot reports have steadily increased, with counties including Rock, Green, and Dane among those affected.
