At 3:45 p.m. Central, Andrew Kolvet, Charlie Kirk’s spokesman, announced Kirk is dead.
Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was 20 minutes into his appearance at an event (12:10 p.m. local time, according to the University’s post on X) at Utah Valley University for his American Comeback Tour when a single shot rang out, striking him in the neck. Kirk was seen with a large amount of blood spilling out of the wound.
Kirk was set to make an appearance at the University of Minnesota on September 22nd.
Video on social media shows the seconds leading up to the incident; he was being asked about mass shootings in America. “Do you know how many mass shooters there have been in America in the last 10 years?” an audience member asks, “Counting or not counting gang violence?” Kirk responds immediately before he is shot.
University representatives told the New York Times the shot came from a nearby building called the Losee Center, approximately 200 yards away from Kirk. An individual was taken into custody after the shooting, but police determined they were not actually the shooter, according to a UVU spokesman. The shooter remains at large, according to the New York Times.
President Trump ordered the flag of the United States to be flown at half-staff.
