Weather officials have released an update on North Dakota’s historic tornado outbreak. The National Weather Service has now confirmed at least 15 separate tornadoes touched down across central North Dakota on Sunday, bringing the state’s 2025 total to at least 73 confirmed tornadoes. This dramatically surpasses the previous record of 61 set in 1999. The Sunday outbreak included an EF-2 tornado near Denhoff in Sheridan County and another EF-2 near Beaver Bay in Emmons County, plus an EF-1 tornado near Mercer. Weather service teams are still working to map tornado tracks, a process that could take several more days. This unprecedented tornado activity makes 2025 the most active tornado year in North Dakota since records began in 1950.
