State regulators say investigation and cleanup efforts continue after a major pipeline spill near Stanley in Mountrail County.
About 840,000 gallons of crude oil mixed with produced water escaped from a six-inch steel flow line roughly four miles northwest of Stanley. The emulsion flowed over agricultural land for nearly 250 yards before being contained with a clay berm. Hess Corporation owns the pipeline.
Hess first saw unusual readings on Sept. 2, but early tests turned up no leak. On Sept. 12, dead vegetation led to the discovery and reporting of the spill.
Officials say there is no known impact to drinking water or major water bodies so far. Subsurface soil and groundwater impacts remain under review.
The cause has been classified as equipment failure, but the full scope of damage is not yet clear. Cleanup work is expected to continue into mid-November.
