Today is Constitution Day and Citizenship Day in the United States, observed annually on September 17. It commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia on September 17, 1787.
Under federal law, schools and agencies that receive federal funds are required to provide educational programming about the U.S. Constitution on this day.
The law establishing this observance was passed in 1952 and updated in 2004 to combine Constitution Day and Citizenship Day—to honor both the founding document and those who have become citizens.
It’s also the beginning of Constitution Week, running through September 23, which is marked by public readings, lesson plans, naturalization ceremonies, and activities promoting civic engagement.
