Highly pathogenic avian influenza, or bird flu, has reemerged in Minnesota poultry.
Officials confirmed Tuesday in Redwood County that a commercial turkey flock of about 20,000 birds tested positive for the H5 strain after mortality spiked.
It’s the first case in Minnesota since April, just weeks after the state was declared free of the disease. Animal health experts say the timing coincides with fall migration of wild waterfowl, raising the risk of new infections.
Authorities emphasize poultry and eggs remain safe to eat when cooked to 165 degrees. Producers are being urged to boost biosecurity, limit contact with wild birds, and report sick or dying flocks immediately.
