Highly pathogenic avian influenza has been confirmed in a central Nebraska dairy herd, marking the first such case in the state.
The Nebraska Department of Agriculture and USDA’s APHIS verified the case through pre-movement milk sample testing required under federal orders. And the herd has been quarantined.
Officials stress that there is no risk to consumer health or the safety of the commercial milk supply, as confirmed by APHIS and the CDC. While the virus poses a low risk to the general public, those in direct contact with infected animals are advised to take protective measures. Nebraska producers are urged to follow strict biosecurity protocols and contact veterinarians if symptoms appear.
