The future of senior meals in Ellendale is stirring debate.

Reporting by Kenneth Smith in the Dickey County Leader says the Senior Center board voted September 3 to stop serving meals onsite after the head cook resigned in late August. Officials say repeated job postings failed to bring in applicants. Meals are still being prepared at Oakes and delivered to Ellendale homes.

At the September 9 City Council meeting, Mayor Don Flaherty said the city should have been notified before the change. The director responded that notices were posted and pointed to low attendance — often just a handful of diners — as part of the reason for the shift.

Community members have since raised concerns about food temperature and communication. The board says the lease on the Ellendale building continues through December, with deliveries offered five days a week.
