Education is foundational to living a successful, well-rounded life, and adult learners from the region prove that we should never stop learning. The North Dakota Association for Lifelong Learners honored outstanding adult students Thursday at the state Capitol, per reporting by Mary Steurer from the North Dakota Monitor. Fatumo Mohid, a Somali refugee and Fargo resident, was named student of the year after earning her driver’s license, starting work at Amazon, and making remarkable progress in English – all while raising three children. In her acceptance speech, Mohid said that “in Somalia, many people believe that a mother with children cannot go to school or succeed, today, I stand here proudly to say that I proved them wrong.” The ceremony also recognized Xander Ridley from Glyndon, Minnesota, who earned the state’s highest GED score this year and plans to study at Minot State University. North Dakota operates twelve adult learning centers statewide, helping residents without high school diplomas, English learners, and those developing job skills.
