Household Food Security Report to be Discontinued

By Ryan King Sep 23, 2025 | 7:36 AM

The Trump administration announced over the weekend that the USDA will discontinue publishing its annual Household Food Security Reports, ending nearly three decades of data tracking on hunger in the U.S.

The agency said the reports were “redundant, costly, politicized, and extraneous,” claiming they failed to show meaningful change despite major increases in SNAP spending. The last report, released in September 2024, found 13.5% of households—about 45 million people—were food insecure, including nearly 9% of households with children.

The move drew immediate backlash from anti-hunger groups, including the Alliance to End Hunger, which called the decision “deeply troubling.” The announcement comes months after the administration’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which made the largest cuts to SNAP in history, and amid reports that low-cost food staples like Hamburger Helper are seeing sales spikes as families tighten budgets.
