SDSU Extension Hosts Corn Disease Workshop

By Ryan King Sep 26, 2025 | 7:45 AM

South Dakota State University Extension hosted a free corn disease scouting workshop at the SDSU Northeast Research Farm. The event was open to farmers, students, and community members. The hands-on field event helped participants identify and manage corn diseases confirmed in South Dakota this season.

SDSU Extension plant pathology specialists also guided attendees through corn fields to observe diseases such as tar spot, southern rust, northern corn leaf blight, and Goss’s Wilt. Tar spot, confirmed in eight counties and suspected in more, is a significant concern this year due to its potential impact on yields. Southern rust has also been found across most eastern South Dakota fields. The event was designed to strengthen farmers’ and crop scouts’ early detection and management skills.
