The U.S. Department of Agriculture is preparing a plan to help rebuild the nation’s beef herd, which has fallen to its lowest level since 1951 due to years of drought.
While ranchers have begun slowly rebuilding, beef prices remain at record highs. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said the USDA will outline both short- and long-term strategies by mid-October, noting the urgency of addressing the herd shortage.
Rollins emphasized that the plan will not include direct payments to producers, explaining that such measures could distort the market. Instead, USDA efforts will focus on opening up additional working lands for grazing and strengthening risk-mitigation tools to support ranchers as they rebuild.
