North Dakotans can now carry their driver’s license or state ID on their smartphone. The North Dakota Department of Transportation’s new Mobile ID can be used at more than 250 airport security checkpoints nationwide and at many businesses and event venues. Director of Driver and Vehicle Services Brad Schaffer says North Dakota is about the nineteenth or twentieth state to offer mobile licenses, calling them “the way of the future.” However, you cannot use the mobile ID during traffic stops and should continue carrying your physical license. The voluntary Mobile ID costs five dollars to enroll through the DOT website and works with Apple, Google, and Samsung wallets. Officials say the digital option offers a secure way to protect sensitive information.
