North Dakota state employees who receive federal funding will not be furloughed or lose pay during the federal government shutdown, according to the Office of Management and Budget. Director Joe Morrissette says less than 10% of state payroll comes from federal dollars, and the state expects interruptions to be short-term, according to reporting by from the North Dakota Monitor. Federal health and social services including Medicaid, SNAP, and WIC continue without disruption through the Department of Health and Human Services. Theodore Roosevelt National Park remains open though visitor centers are closed. However, Spirit Lake Nation announced restrictions to its Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program due to limited funding. Morrissette says if the shutdown exceeds 35 days, the state may need to revisit options including tapping Bank of North Dakota funds or calling a special legislative session.
