North Dakota Attorney General Drew Wrigley urged future criminal justice professionals Wednesday to prepare for combating crimes committed using artificial intelligence. AI has evolved exponentially in the last few years, with the technology absorbing and utilizing vast data sources in powerful and sometimes risky ways. Speaking at Concordia College in Moorhead, which is launching a new criminal justice program, Wrigley said “AI is not emerging, it’s here” and can be used for both good and bad. According to reporting by Jeff Beach of the North Dakota Monitor, he referenced his office’s ongoing investigation into Davies High School students using AI to create sexually exploitative images, saying that addressing issues like this is essential for the next 30 years of criminal justice. Wrigley also noted AI is being used to create false documents for extortion schemes. He told students that combating AI crimes will be crucial work, and that addressing North Dakota’s need for legal professionals is critical, saying “there is nothing more important than personnel.”
