The H5N1 avian influenza virus is continuing to spread across North America, with new outbreaks confirmed on turkey farms in Minnesota and Utah.
USDA officials reported that since late August, 17 farms, most in the Midwest, have been affected, resulting in the loss of nearly 4 million birds. Recent cases include a 33,000-bird turkey flock in Minnesota and a massive layer farm in Wisconsin housing more than 3 million hens. Smaller backyard flocks across several states have also tested positive. Utah’s state veterinarian, Dr. Kelly Pehrson, urged vigilance as migratory bird season begins.
With migratory birds expected to increase transmission risks in the weeks ahead, officials in the United States and Canada stress that strong biosecurity measures remain the best defense against H5N1’s mounting challenges.
