Crews contained two fast-moving field fires in Traill County yesterday.

The Sheriff’s Office says the first blaze started around 2 p.m. southwest of Hillsboro when a combine harvesting soybeans sparked a fire that, helped by wind and dry conditions, ran about a mile and a half and burned roughly 60 acres. No injuries were reported.

Fire departments from Hillsboro, Grandin-Gardner, Hunter, Halstad and Hendrum responded, and area farmers cut firebreaks with tillage equipment to slow the spread. Authorities say the fire was contained by about 5 p.m.

Officials also report a second fire later in the afternoon near Mayville. Crews from Mayville and Portland knocked that one down; crops were spared, though a combine was damaged. No injuries were reported there either.

Local agencies are urging harvest crews to stay alert for sparks and to keep equipment clear of crop residue as dry, breezy conditions persist across the Red River Valley. For current fire-danger and burn-restriction maps, check the state’s NDResponse portal.
