North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong
Governor Kelly Armstrong has proclaimed October as Substance Use Prevention Month in North Dakota, recognizing significant progress in reducing youth substance use. North Dakota Health and Human Services reports alcohol use among high school students dropped from 35% in 2013 to 19.5% in 2023. Community Prevention Administrator Tori Reiner says “prevention is about giving people the tools and support they need to live well.” HHS is offering a free prevention toolkit with resources for families, schools and communities at hhs.nd.gov. Parents Lead is also hosting a billboard contest where students can design prevention messages. Reiner encourages everyone to take action this month, whether by having conversations with children, sharing resources at work, or joining local prevention coalitions to build healthier communities across North Dakota.
