The U.S. Senate has confirmed two North Dakotans to federal posts.

Kirsten Baesler, the state’s Superintendent of Public Instruction, was confirmed Tuesday as Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education at the U.S. Department of Education.

Baesler has led North Dakota’s public schools since 2013. She will step down from her state role once the federal government’s partial shutdown ends and the Department of Education resumes full operations.

Nicholas W. Chase, a longtime federal prosecutor and state district judge, was also approved as U.S. Attorney for North Dakota.

Governor Kelly Armstrong later issued a statement congratulating both appointees, saying their experience will serve the state and nation well.
