Canadian officials are raising concerns about two major dairy projects in eastern North Dakota, prompting an international review and a response from Governor Kelly Armstrong.
The two developments in question are planned in Traill and Richland counties. The dairies, owned by Riverview LLP, would house nearly 40,000 cows combined. The International Joint Commission is reviewing the projects after officials in Manitoba’s Environment Ministry raised concerns that nutrient runoff could affect Lake Winnipeg and the Red River watershed. Officials cited phosphorus and nitrogen levels they say are already too high at the border.
North Dakota’s Department of Environmental Quality has already approved permits for the dairy projects, saying surface-water discharges are prohibited and oversight will continue.
The North Dakota Monitor, which reported extensively on this story today, said Governor Kelly Armstrong stated to them in an email that the dairies meet state and federal standards and reflect “responsible growth that benefits local economies while protecting our natural resources.”
