Scammers are impersonating government officials to attempt to trick residents into buying gold for them, according to a press release issued Wednesday, Oct. 15 from North Dakota Attorney General Drew Wrigley. The press release says that these scammers “create panic and fear” by using threats to spark false urgency. The scam involves the victim purchasing gold, which is then transferred back to the scammers in the guise of protecting the victim’s money. They also are known to send forged documents to increase credibility.
“If someone tells you to move your money in this fashion to protect it, it’s a scam,” Wrigley said. “No real government agent will ever tell you to buy gold bars, move your money, or hand over gold or cash to someone.”
Other scams utilizing cryptocurrency are on the rise, according to Wrigley. If you suspect you’ve encountered a scam, contact the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at 701-328-3404.
