The North Dakota Badlands have been named one of National Geographic’s “Best of the World” destinations for 2026, placing the rugged western landscape among 25 top global travel experiences. The annual list highlights immersive travel opportunities connecting visitors with nature, culture, and community. The North Dakota Department of Tourism says the region’s authentic connection to Theodore Roosevelt, whose conservation legacy is rooted here, likely set North Dakota apart. Tourism officials expect the recognition to spark increased interest in western North Dakota, especially with the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library opening July 4th in Medora. The department will feature the National Geographic honor prominently in 2026 marketing campaigns and use it to strengthen pitches to travel media and influencers. Officials say the recognition “aligns with our Be Legendary brand” and positions western North Dakota to grow as a heritage and adventure destination.
