One of Jamestown’s long-standing wildlife research institutions is facing significant job cuts, and the local community is sounding the alarm.

A federal document shows the Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center in Jamestown would lose 28 of its roughly 40 positions, under plans from the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Only 29 positions are currently filled, meaning nearly the entire staff is on the chopping block.  Experts say eliminating positions would severely impact local scientific work and the regional economy.   Jamestown officials say the layoff plan would send shockwaves through the community, potentially driving researchers and their families to leave.

The Research Center, established in 1965 and part of the U.S. Geological Survey, has conducted wide-ranging studies on migratory waterfowl, grasslands and wolf recovery.

A federal judge has placed a temporary hold on the reductions after a lawsuit, but officials say the future remains uncertain.  The North Dakota Monitor has reported on this story extensively.
